New Delhi, Aug 1 (NationPress) The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has officially announced the selection of Khalid Jamil as the new head coach for the senior India men's national football team, following a decision made by the AIFF Executive Committee.
The Executive Committee endorsed Jamil's appointment from a shortlist of three candidates put forward by the AIFF Technical Committee. The other applicants included former India head coach Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic, who has previously managed the Slovakia national team.
In an official statement, the AIFF confirmed that Dronacharya Awardee coaches Bimal Ghosh and Armando Colaco, along with Dhyan Chand Awardee Shabbir Ali and Technical Committee chairperson IM Vijayan, were strong proponents of appointing an Indian coach for the first time in 13 years.
“During the meeting attended by AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, Vice President NA Haris, Treasurer Shri Kipa Ajay, and members from both the Executive and Technical committees, a SWOT analysis was presented by AIFF’s Technical Director Syed Sabir Pasha and National Teams Director Subrata Paul for the three shortlisted coaches – Khalid Jamil, Stephen Constantine, and Stefan Tarkovic.
“Colaco, Ghosh, and Ali voiced their collective opinion that the AIFF should prioritize the selection of an Indian coach for the senior men’s national squad. They noted that all three had once been Indian coaches with no national experience themselves, emphasizing the need for Indian coaches to be given a fair opportunity to showcase their abilities.
“Chairperson of the Technical Committee IM Vijayan, a recipient of the Padma Shri and Arjuna Award, recounted his playing days and mentioned how India's FIFA ranking was significantly higher under coaches like Sukhwinder Singh and Syed Nayeemuddin. He strongly endorsed Khalid Jamil, who has won the AIFF’s Men’s Coach of the Year Award twice (2023-24 and 2024-25),” stated the AIFF.
A former midfielder, Jamil has established himself within the Indian football landscape, making significant contributions across the I-League, I-League 2, and the Indian Super League. His tenure with Aizawl FC saw the team clinch its only top-flight championship. He joined Jamshedpur FC midway through the 2023–24 season, guiding them to the Super Cup semifinals and subsequently to a runner-up position and an ISL semifinal berth in the following season.
