Raipur, April 3 (NationPress) Six-time World Champion medallist Mary Kom and former captain of the Indian football team Bhaichung Bhutia highlighted the significance of investing in grassroots initiatives and creating structured development pathways during a press conference at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 in Raipur on Friday.
To cultivate future champions, both esteemed athletes emphasized the need for Indian families to limit children's screen time and encourage them to engage in sports on playgrounds.
Bhutia, regarded as one of the most iconic figures in Indian football, asserted that while programs like the Khelo India Tribal Games (KIBG) represent a strong foundation, the long-term success of sports in India depends on reinforcing the grassroots level. Reflecting on his own experiences, he acknowledged the pivotal role of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in developing young athletes during a period when the nation’s sports infrastructure was still maturing.
“I am a product of SAI, having been part of the inaugural batch in 1986. Investing in grassroots is crucial, yet we often neglect it in favor of focusing on elite athletes,” Bhutia remarked, stressing the necessity for ongoing support at the base of the sporting hierarchy.
He pointed out the wealth of talent present in tribal areas, which requires a conducive environment to thrive.
“Tribal communities are naturally endowed with vast sporting potential, which is evident from the Northeast, where numerous athletes have represented India with distinction on the global stage. Providing youth with the right platforms is vital. I believe that in the future, we will see an influx of talent from tribal backgrounds, marking just the beginning of their journey,” he stated.
Bhutia also discussed how one's surroundings and access to resources significantly shape athletes, recalling his own formative years.
“When I describe my origins, I always mention that in the Northeast, you either play football or pursue music. That was the culture. Football dominated the landscape in Sikkim, present in every village and town,” he shared.
In agreement, Mary Kom commended the Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) as a groundbreaking initiative that can help eliminate longstanding barriers to access and awareness.
“Firstly, I would like to congratulate the Chhattisgarh Government. The Khelo India Tribal Games originated here in Chhattisgarh, and I am thrilled to support this initiative wholeheartedly, as our tribal communities possess immense potential. In the past, they lacked platforms and awareness, which may have hindered talented children from progressing,” said the bronze medallist from the 2012 London Olympics.
The celebrated boxer from Manipur also pointed out how government-supported initiatives are beginning to transform the sports landscape. “Thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji's Khelo India and Fit India programs, children are gradually taking the initiative, engaging in sports, and representing the nation. This is a remarkable development for the future of Indian sports,” she added.
Mary Kom reiterated that while opportunities are improving, discipline and perseverance are crucial for success, urging young athletes to take full advantage of the available support.
