New Delhi, March 6 (NationPress) The first-ever Khelo India Tribal Games are scheduled to take place from March 26 to April 6 across three cities in Chhattisgarh: Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Sarguja, as announced by the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, on Friday.

The event will showcase seven competitive sports, namely athletics, football, hockey, weightlifting, archery, swimming, and wrestling, alongside two demonstration sports: mallakhamb and kabaddi. Athletes from nearly all states and Union Territories of India will participate in the KITG.

“The Khelo India Tribal Games are a crucial part of our initiative to provide opportunities for every youth eager to engage in sports. This aligns with PM Narendra Modi’s aspiration for a Viksit Bharat by 2024, where sports play an essential role,” stated Dr. Mandaviya.

The logo, theme song, and mascot for the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) were officially launched at the Late B. R. Yadav Sports Stadium in Bilaspur on December 23. The ceremony was attended by the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Vishnu Deo Sai, and Deputy Chief Minister Shri Arun Sao.

Mandaviya emphasized the importance of the Games in enhancing the talent pool emerging from tribal regions. “Identifying and nurturing talent from tribal areas is critical. We are committed to systematically supporting and integrating these talented young individuals into the national sports framework,” he added.

The KITG 2026 will be collaboratively overseen by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Indian Olympic Association, National Sports Federations, and the Chhattisgarh state organizing committee, with technical standards aligned with international competitions.

The official mascot, Morveer, is steeped in the cultural heritage of Chhattisgarh. The name combines ‘Mor’, signifying 'my' or 'our' in Chhattisgarhi, with ‘Veer’, representing bravery and valor. Morveer embodies the spirit, pride, and identity of India’s tribal communities.

With Chhattisgarh being the inaugural host for this significant national event dedicated solely to tribal athletes, this marks a pivotal development in India’s sports landscape aimed at empowering tribal communities and promoting grassroots inclusion.

The Khelo India Tribal Games are a fundamental component of the Khelo India Scheme, a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, designed to foster mass participation and sporting excellence. The Khelo India Games were declared an ‘Event of National Importance’ in 2020 under the Sports Broadcasting Signals Act, 2007.
