Patna, May 12 (NationPress) The Khelo India Youth Games 2025 Bihar has made significant strides in preparing young wrestlers for the international arena by introducing a crucial two-day weigh-in system. This initiative aims to ensure that grapplers are well-versed in global competition rules, particularly as they navigate their respective weight categories.
Competition manager VN Prasood, also the secretary general of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and an esteemed international referee, emphasized the importance of aligning the Khelo India competition with standard international regulations.
“It is essential for our wrestlers to grasp the rules and experiences they will encounter on the world stage. The weigh-in is a vital component of wrestling. From an early age, athletes must learn that they need to make weight on both days to avoid disqualification,” he stated.
Although this requirement may be new for some wrestlers, they are aware of its significance. Naina (Haryana), the defending champion in the girls' 49kg category, expressed that this rule is indispensable for athletes aiming for prestigious events like the Asian Games, World Championships, or the Olympics.
Naina remarked, “When such habits are instilled early, they remain with the athlete throughout their career. For athletes to excel in international competitions, it is crucial to understand the two-day weigh-in process. While it may be challenging at first to make weight twice, adapting to this will ultimately benefit us,” she explained.
Sunny Baisla (Uttar Pradesh), who secured a bronze medal at last year's Khelo India Youth Games, echoed her sentiments and welcomed the two-day competition format. “This practice is followed worldwide, and implementing it here is in the best interest of the wrestlers,” he commented.
The wrestling events for Khelo India Youth Games 2025 Bihar began on Monday at Gyan Bhawan. Preliminary matches are currently underway across seven categories: boys' Freestyle 65kg and 86kg, boys Greco-Roman 55kg, 67kg, and 97kg, as well as girls' wrestling 57kg and 68kg.
