Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov has signed a new long-term contract with Manchester City, keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031 with an option for a further year. The deal, announced on 25 July, replaces his previous contract that was set to run until 2029 and represents a significant vote of confidence in the 22-year-old from the club's hierarchy.

A Breakthrough Season at the Etihad

Khusanov, who joined City from French club Lens in January 2025, wasted little time establishing himself in the Premier League. The Uzbekistan international made 37 appearances across all competitions in his debut campaign — a remarkable return for a centre-back arriving mid-season from Ligue 1.

He also featured as part of Uzbekistan's squad at the World Cup, underlining his rapid rise on the international stage. His performances for club and country have made him one of the more compelling defensive stories in European football over the past 18 months.

The Guehi Partnership and Cup Glory

The second half of the season saw Khusanov forge a commanding centre-back partnership with Marc Guehi, playing 16 of the last 19 Premier League matches for City. He also played starring roles in both the FA Cup and League Cup finals, as Manchester City claimed a domestic cup double.

That combination of league consistency and big-match contributions appears to have accelerated the club's decision to secure his future well ahead of the original contract expiry.

Expressing his delight at the extension, Khusanov said: 'This is a great day for me and my family – I am really happy to extend my stay at City. I've enjoyed every minute since I arrived in Manchester and I feel I am growing and learning a lot as a player.'

He added: 'I have a new challenge now, which is to impress Enzo Maresca and his staff and ensure I am in his team regularly. I am determined to do that. Thank you to the City fans for all of your support. It has been really important as I've settled in England and the Premier League. Now I am only looking forward. I'm ready to do everything I can to help this Club be as successful as possible.'
