Tottenham Hotspur Secures Captain Heung-Min Son's Contract Extension Until 2026

London, Jan 7 (NationPress) Tottenham Hotspur has made the decision to extend the contract of captain Heung-Min Son for an additional year, ensuring it now runs until the summer of 2026. Since his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen nearly ten years ago, the player wearing number seven has flourished at Lilywhite, racking up 431 appearances, placing him 11th on the club's all-time appearances chart, and netting 169 goals, making him the fourth-highest scorer in the club's history.
In August 2023, he was appointed as the club captain, and the South Korean forward has undoubtedly etched his name into Tottenham's legacy, delivering numerous memorable goals during pivotal moments for the team.
“We are thrilled to announce that we have taken up the option to extend Heung-Min Son's contract, which will now last until the summer of 2026. Since he joined the club in August 2015, Sonny, now 32, has evolved into a global sensation and a modern legend at Tottenham Hotspur,” stated the club's announcement.
Son marked his first goals for Tottenham in September 2015 during a Europa League match against Qarabag at his White Hart Lane debut. He went on to score the inaugural goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Crystal Palace in April 2019, and then netted his first Champions League goal a week later against Manchester City.
As part of the squad that made it to the UEFA Champions League Final for the first time in 2019, he later mesmerized fans with an astonishing solo goal against Burnley, covering over 80 yards before finding the net in front of the South Stand. The following year, that goal won him the FIFA Puskas Award, making him the first Asian player to achieve this prestigious honor.
During the 2021/22 season, he experienced his most prolific scoring campaign, clinching the Premier League Golden Boot with 23 goals, aiding Tottenham's return to the Champions League.
With a total of 125 goals, he now ranks among the top 20 all-time goalscorers in the Premier League, achieving the second-highest tally for any Spurs player. This season, he also surpassed the club's long-standing assist record in the Premier League, achieving his 68th assist in December's 5-0 triumph over Southampton.
As the captain of his national team, he has made 131 appearances for South Korea, scoring 51 times, and has represented his country at the FIFA World Cups in 2014, 2018, and 2022. He has been voted the AFC Asian International Player of the Year a record four times, secured gold at the 2018 Asian Games, and reached the Asian Cup Final with Korea in 2015.
