London, Aug 13 (NationPress) Cristian Romero has been appointed as the new captain of Tottenham Hotspur by Thomas Frank following the exit of Heung-Min Son. The South Korean forward has transferred to Los Angeles FC in the MLS.
'Cuti' was elevated to the role of vice-captain alongside James Maddison in August 2023, and now he takes on the captain's armband. "It is a tremendous honor to become the inaugural captain of this remarkable club. I came here four years ago with a singular ambition: to engrave my name in the club’s history and make a mark by winning a trophy, and I succeeded in that," Romero stated on X.
"Now, a fresh journey lies ahead of us. An exciting season is upon us, and together we will strive to recreate the joy of that unforgettable day, May 21, 2025. Whatever challenges we face, I ask for just one thing: unity. There will be peaks and valleys, but together, nothing is unachievable," he added.
Tottenham is presently in Udine, Italy, gearing up for the UEFA Super Cup against PSG at Stadio Friuli this Thursday (IST). Thomas confirmed the decision ahead of this crucial clash, planning to announce his leadership group post the summer transfer window.
"I had a productive discussion with Cuti Romero, and he will be our captain. He felt incredibly honored and thrilled about it. Leading this magnificent club onto the pitch is significant, not just for this Super Cup but for the entire season. He possesses all the right attributes. He leads by example on the field, driving the team forward in every respect, and off the field, he consistently motivates the squad.
"I am looking to establish a leadership group as well. Of course, one individual will don the armband and assume the captaincy, but I aspire to have as many leaders as possible—four to five in the leadership group who can assist, because, like me, I cannot do everything alone and require an excellent coaching staff around me. I will announce that leadership group after the window to allow time for assessment," Thomas informed Spurs media.
World Cup champion Cuti, now 27, joined Spurs from Atalanta in the summer of 2021, shortly after being named 'Best Defender' in Serie A for the 2020/21 season. He has now made 100 appearances for the team across all competitions, and his central defensive partnership with Micky van de Ven was pivotal in their success during the UEFA Europa League last season.
