New Delhi, Aug 2 (NationPress) Tottenham Hotspur icon Son Heung-Min is eager to join Major League Soccer team Los Angeles FC following his announcement to part ways with the club after a decade.
His farewell match, where he will captain the team, is set against Newcastle United at the Seoul World Cup Stadium this Sunday.
While clubs from the Saudi Pro League have shown interest in acquiring Son, his preference leans towards LAFC, where former Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris currently plays and where ex-Spurs star Gareth Bale clinched an MLS Cup.
With the largest Korean community outside Asia residing in the United States, particularly in Los Angeles, Son is likely to tap into significant commercial prospects in the U.S., as highlighted by The Athletic.
At 33 years old, Son, who has a contract with Spurs until 2026, revealed his decision to leave during a press conference with Thomas Frank in Seoul.
"I wanted to say I have decided to leave the club this summer. Respectfully, the club is helping me with this decision. It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. Such amazing memories. It was so hard to make the decision.
"I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change - 10 years is a long time. I came to north London as a kid, 23 years old, such a young age. I leave this club as a grown man, a very proud man," Son stated at the conference.
Son, ranked fifth in Spurs' all-time goalscorers with 173 goals, last season became only the seventh player in the club's history to surpass 450 appearances, reaching a total of 454. The South Korean forward joined Spurs in late August 2015 and marked his decade at the club by lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy in May, after a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the final held in Bilbao.
