New Delhi, Aug 2 (NationPress) Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has declared his exit from the club this summer after a decade of service.
The South Korean star joined Spurs at the end of August 2015 and marked his 10-year milestone by lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy in May.
At 33 years old, Son, who is contracted with Spurs until 2026, revealed his departure during a press conference alongside Thomas Frank in Seoul.
"I wanted to announce that I have decided to leave the club this summer. The club is assisting me respectfully with this decision. It was the toughest choice I have made in my career, filled with incredible memories. Making this decision was incredibly challenging.
"I am seeking a new setting to challenge myself. A bit of change is necessary - 10 years is quite a long time. I arrived in north London as a young man, just 23 years old, and I leave as a proud adult.
"I want to express my gratitude to all the Spurs fans for their immense love. I hope this farewell is well-timed and that it is the right moment for me to make this decision. I trust everyone will understand and respect it," Son expressed at the press conference.
Son ranks fifth on the all-time goalscoring list for Spurs with 173 goals and last season became only the seventh player in the club's history to surpass 450 appearances, totaling 454.
In response to the announcement, Coach Frank stated, "Personally, I would have loved the opportunity to work with such a fantastic individual and player. He is a genuine Spurs legend, one of the greatest to have played in the Premier League. Timing is tricky, and my arrival from the outside makes it a bit easier to conclude on a high note."
When asked if he had informed his teammates of his plans and their reactions, the captain replied, "I spoke to a few of them. They will feel disappointed, respectfully. I am very close with Ben, and we have discussed the future, but he respected my choice.
"It’s hard to tell my teammates when you spend more time with them than your own family. While they may be disappointed, I believe they will also be happy for me. That’s how I feel, although I can’t fully speak for them."
Tottenham is in Seoul as part of their pre-season training, with Son set to start and captain the team against Newcastle in their friendly match on Sunday, which could mark his final appearance for the club on home soil.
