New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) Canada cricketer Nicholas Kirton opened up about the most challenging period of his career, referring to the airport arrest incident as "very challenging" and calling it a transformative learning experience.

He acknowledged his error, the mental toll it took on him, and the resilience that enabled his comeback to the national team. One of Kirton’s most cherished cricket moments remains his pivotal performance against Ireland at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where Canada claimed a 12-run victory, marking their only win in their inaugural tournament appearance. He played a crucial role in that match, which felt like the dawn of a promising era.

However, it turned out to be the pinnacle before a sudden personal downturn. In April 2025, just months after leading Canada on the world stage, the Barbados-born batter faced arrest upon his arrival at Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados. Authorities reportedly discovered 20 pounds of cannabis in a bag linked to him. He was charged with possession and trafficking, pleaded not guilty, and was released on bail, but the incident raised significant concerns about his cricketing future.

"It was very challenging. I was returning to Barbados and asked a friend to pick up a bag for me, which contained new gear from my sponsor. When the bag was delivered, I failed to inspect it thoroughly. Upon my arrival in Barbados, the contraband was discovered," Kirton recounted to www.telecomasia.net.

"It was an unfortunate situation but undoubtedly a learning experience for me. It taught me to exercise more caution and not to place blind trust in anyone. I trusted this individual because I had known them for a long time, but I am now much more vigilant."

The repercussions extended beyond legal matters; they were deeply psychological as well. There were times when the 27-year-old questioned whether he would ever compete in cricket again. To regain his equilibrium, he sought therapy.

"Yes, I needed to find the right mindset, so I underwent therapy for a few weeks. I reflected on the entire scenario; what I could have controlled and what I could have done differently to avert it. Naturally, you don’t anticipate someone you trust to betray you. It took time to reconcile with it, but ultimately, it was a valuable learning experience for me."

After months of discussions involving his legal team, Cricket Canada, and relevant authorities, Kirton was authorized to resume playing. He was reinstated into the national squad and is currently in India for the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup, determined not to allow one incident to define his career.

"I actually resumed playing a few months later and have been with the team ever since," he shared. "I was fairly confident about my selection for the 2026 T20 World Cup, as I had captained the side in the preceding series before the tournament."

Although he no longer leads the team—with Dilpreet Bajwa now at the helm—Kirton has embraced this transition.

"I actually prefer it," he confessed. "It’s a bit less pressure, allowing me to concentrate on my own performance. It’s been quite fulfilling, and I aim to support the team in any way possible."

Born in Barbados, Kirton represented the West Indies Under-19 team and engaged in domestic cricket before relocating to Canada, qualifying through his mother.

"Cricket has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My mother introduced me to a junior program in Barbados when I was six or seven. She is actually the reason I was able to qualify to play for Canada since she was born there."

Now competing in India, Kirton is convinced that exposure to elite conditions and global competition is crucial for Canada’s growth.

"Simply having the opportunity to practice in such facilities, engage with international players, and observe their preparation is a valuable learning experience," he stated. "We are absorbing the World Cup experience here in India."

Beyond his personal redemption, his commitment is firmly on ensuring a prosperous future for Canada in international cricket.

"Ultimately, my primary focus is to ensure Canada retains its ODI status," he emphasized. "We are currently mid-table. It’s my main priority to keep Canada at this level for as long as possible."
