Will Knight and Patel Shine in Their International Debut for New Zealand Women Against Zimbabwe?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Wellington, Feb 20 (NationPress) The uncapped pair of Kayley Knight and Nensi Patel have been included in the New Zealand Women's squad, poised to make their international debuts in the upcoming home series against Zimbabwe, as announced by NZC on Friday.
The series kicks off on February 24 and will be the inaugural women's international series between Zimbabwe and New Zealand, featuring three T20Is and an equal number of ODIs, held at Seddon Park in Hamilton and University of Otago Oval in Dunedin.
Knight, who has played for New Zealand in the U19 T20 World Cup, was instrumental in the Northern Brave's T20 bowling lineup during the Super Smash, securing 10 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 6.16.
The off-spin all-rounder Nensi makes her return after being centrally contracted in the 2022-23 season, having showcased her skills as the top run-scorer and tied for second in wickets for the Northern Brave in the Super Smash.
Head Coach Ben Sawyer commended both players for their consistent performances over the past 12-18 months, expressing excitement over their selection. He noted, "Nensi has proven her worth with both bat and ball, and with Eden unavailable, we aim to use her as a primary spin option alongside Melie. Kayley's future looks promising, and she is ready to step up as a frontline seam option at this level."
According to NZC, Molly Penfold will take Knight's place in the ODI squad, joining a pace attack that includes left-armer Bree Illing and right-arm bowlers Jess Kerr and Rosemary Mair.
The squad will be led by Melie Kerr, who has played 172 internationals for the White Ferns, marking her first series as the permanent captain.
Veteran players Suzie Bates (quadriceps) and Eden Carson (elbow) are unavailable due to injuries, while Lea Tahuhu is being managed for physical preparation ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in June. Additionally, Sophie Devine is not available for this series due to her casual contract with NZC.
