Zimbabwe's Kelis Ndhlovu Out of Final ODI Against New Zealand Due to Concussion
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dunedin, March 10 (NationPress) The Zimbabwe women's cricket team faces a significant setback ahead of the concluding match of their three-match ODI series against New Zealand, scheduled for Wednesday at the University Oval. Opener Kelis Ndhlovu has been sidelined after suffering a concussion during the second match on Sunday at the same venue.
Ndhlovu is currently recuperating and is under medical care following the incident.
As per an official statement from Zimbabwe Cricket, Ndhlovu briefly lost consciousness after the incident and was diagnosed with a concussion. Fortunately, the organization reported that no serious complications arose from her injury.
"An MRI scan confirmed there was no skull fracture," ZC stated. "She received treatment and was discharged from the hospital. Ndhlovu underwent a follow-up examination on Tuesday morning, where further tests indicated no additional complications," Zimbabwe Cricket added in the official update.
The injury occurred during the seventh over of Zimbabwe’s innings when Ndhlovu was hit on the head by a short delivery from New Zealand's pacer Bree Illing.
At that moment, Ndhlovu had established a 25-run opening partnership with Modester Mupachikwa. Although she attempted to duck under the bouncer, she was struck despite wearing a helmet. The impact caused her to collapse immediately, necessitating urgent medical intervention on the field before she was transported to the hospital via ambulance.
In her absence, Tendai Makusha was brought in as Ndhlovu’s concussion substitute.
New Zealand secured an eight-wicket victory in that match, with Amelia Kerr shining brightly by taking seven wickets. This victory gave the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ODI series.
New Zealand had earlier completed a 3-0 win in the T20I series and will aim to conclude the ODI series in a similar fashion when they face Zimbabwe on Wednesday.
