Indore, Oct 1 (NationPress) Left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux makes her comeback to Australia’s lineup for the first time following her recovery from knee surgery, as captain Alyssa Healy won the toss and chose to bat first against New Zealand in their 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup opener at Holkar Stadium on Wednesday.
With Molineux's return, experienced fast bowler Megan Schutt has been omitted, allowing Australia to utilize the pure pace of Darcie Brown alongside Molineux. Australia, who have clinched the world championship title seven times and are the defending champions, are eager to kick off their title defense. This match also marks the first international women's game at this venue.
“We just need to put some runs on the board and see how things unfold. The conditions were tough in our recent matches, but we are ready. The team is in excellent spirits, and we are focused on improving our performance in every opportunity,” Healy commented.
Conversely, New Zealand is stepping onto the field for their first ODI in six months. Captain Sophie Devine mentioned that she too would have preferred to bat first. “Starting the tournament on a fresh pitch doesn’t concern me. Our side has a strong balance with seasoned players like Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer,” she expressed.
“I’m just thankful for the opportunity to represent my country again. It fills me with pride. While results matter, what truly counts are the relationships we build within the team,” Devine added.
