Birmingham, July 5 (NationPress) Former Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli has praised current captain Shubman Gill for his exceptional performance during the second Test match against England. Gill impressively followed his double century in the first innings with a remarkable century in the second.
He scored an outstanding 161 runs off 162 balls, which contributed to India's declaration at 427/6 in 83 overs at Edgbaston on Saturday. Earlier in the week, the 25-year-old had made a stunning 269 runs in the first innings.
Kohli shared his admiration on Instagram, stating, 'Well played, star boy. Rewriting history. Onwards and upwards from here. You deserve all of this,' alongside a photo of Gill celebrating his century. Kohli had recently announced his retirement from Test cricket before India's tour of England, shortly after Rohit Sharma's retirement.
In the first Test at Headingley, Gill commenced the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series with a brilliant 147 runs. Despite his efforts, India faced a five-wicket loss, although Rishabh Pant scored centuries in both innings, and Yashasvi Jaiswal and K.L. Rahul also reached three-figure scores.
On Saturday, Gill showcased his talent with elegant stroke play, hitting 13 fours and 8 sixes. This was his eighth Test century, fifth against England, and third in four innings as India’s Test captain. With a total of 430 runs, he is now the second-highest run-scorer in a single Test match, trailing only England’s Graham Gooch (456 runs), and the first player to score both 200 and 150 in the same Test match.
He received strong support from KL Rahul (55), Rishabh Pant (65), and Ravindra Jadeja (69 not out), setting England an imposing chase of 608 runs to win the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series.
