Kohli's impressive knock of 93 runs off 91 balls played a pivotal role in leading the hosts to victory, drawing him closer to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and positioning him as second on the all-time men's international run-scoring list. His recent form has been outstanding, with scores of 74 not out, 135, 102, 65 not out, and 93 in his last five outings since the ODI series in Australia.
The 37-year-old batting icon ascends to the top of the rankings for the first time since July 2021, following his stellar performance that enabled India to chase down New Zealand's 300-run target in Vadodara.
Kohli first achieved the top ranking in October 2013, marking his 11th time in this position. Overall, he has spent 825 days at the top, making it the 10th longest in history and the longest for any Indian player.
New Zealand's all-rounder Daryl Mitchell also saw a rise in the ODI rankings after scoring 84 runs off 71 balls in the first ODI, earning his highest rating, just one point behind Kohli.
Mitchell has been in fantastic form, having previously held the No. 1 position, with three half-centuries in his last five ODIs and a century against the West Indies.
His teammate Devon Conway climbed three spots to the 29th position, maintaining his steady run-scoring.

Pacer Kyle Jamieson also advanced significantly after an outstanding performance against India, taking four wickets and moving up 27 positions to share the 69th position with India's Arshdeep Singh.
Several Australian players made gains in the Test rankings following the conclusion of the Ashes series, with Travis Head jumping seven spots to third place, becoming the top scorer in the high-profile Test series against England, where he amassed 629 runs at an average of 62.90, including three centuries.
Other notable Test advancements include Jacob Bethell, who rose 25 spots to share the 52nd position with Tom Blundell after an impressive maiden Test century in the final Ashes Test, and Michael Neser, who moved up seven spots to 47th place following a strong outing in Sydney.
