New Delhi, April 26 (NationPress) Shambhavi Kshirsagar from Maharashtra triumphed over world championship medalists, Olympic finalists, and national champions to secure victory in the women’s 10m air rifle event at the 23rd Kumar Surendra Singh Memorial Shooting Championship (23rd KSSM) held at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range.

The 16-year-old, who ranked fifth in the Junior World Cup in Lima last year, led the qualification round with an impressive score of 633.5. She concluded the final with an outstanding 10.8 on her last shot of the 24-shot finale, surpassing Haryana’s Ramita, a finalist from the Paris Olympics. The bronze medal went to Mehuli Ghosh from West Bengal.

On Saturday at the Karni Singh Shooting Range, Shambhavi distinguished herself by also securing a silver in the junior women’s event and a second gold in the youth women’s category.

Winning the senior women’s title was particularly significant for her, as she competed against top shooters including Mehuli, Ramita, Ananya Naidu, the newly crowned national champion, and Shreya Agrawal, a Junior World Championship medalist.

As they approached the final two shots of the 24-shot decider, Ramita was ahead by 0.1. Both athletes delivered identical 10.2s for their 23rd shot, but Shambhavi’s final shot left the Olympian trailing with a total of 252.1 compared to Shambhavi’s 252.9. Mehuli exited after the 22nd shot with 231.0.

However, Ramita avenged her earlier defeat by winning the subsequent junior women’s final against Shambhavi by a margin of 1.5. Manya Mittal from Uttar Pradesh secured the third position.

Despite this setback, Shambhavi showcased remarkable resilience and returned to clinch the youth women’s title, outscoring Nidhi Mittal from Karnataka with a score of 253.6. Nidhi fell short by 1.8 points, while Madhya Pradesh’s Gautami Bhanot finished in third place.

The senior qualification event attracted a total of 411 shooters.
