Lahore, Feb 27 (NationPress) Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne believes that effectively addressing Afghanistan's spin during the middle overs is essential for their success in the final Group B match of the ICC Champions Trophy on Friday.
Following a washout against group leaders South Africa in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, Australia finds itself in a must-win scenario against Afghanistan to secure a spot in the semi-finals. Australia triumphed over England by five wickets in their opening match, while Afghanistan recently edged past the 2019 ODI World Cup champions by eight runs in a thrilling contest on Wednesday.
Building on their strong performance against England, Afghanistan aims to clinch a semi-final berth with a victory over Australia.
Labuschagne expressed, "We'll be focusing on both our batting and bowling strategies. When batting, we need to tackle their spin during the middle overs, which has proven to be a significant strength for them."
"Their pace attack has also shown impressive form in recent outings. Noor Ahmed began exceptionally well; they concluded the game strongly last night. Their batting lineup is formidable. In our last match against Afghanistan, their top order scored over three hundred, and Maxwell played a brilliant innings to secure our win. We will target various aspects of the game, adapting to what we encounter tomorrow," he added.
In their last meeting during the 2024 T20 World Cup, Afghanistan triumphed over Australia by 21 runs, marking their first semi-final spot in an ICC tournament.
Conversely, in their recent ODI clash at the 2023 ODI World Cup in Mumbai, Afghanistan came close to defeating the eventual champions, but Glenn Maxwell's spectacular double-century ensured an Australian victory.
Regarding match preparations, Labuschagne remarked, "Most of our prep occurred prior to the tournament. Unfortunately, we experienced a rainout in training and against South Africa, so our current practice is indoors. The team has extensive experience and is prepared. In tournaments, readiness is key. Despite the interruptions, we will be ready for tomorrow."
When asked if Afghanistan is still considered underdogs, Labuschagne responded, "I'm not in a position to judge that. We are playing against Afghanistan, and we recognize their skill and talent. We will ensure we are thoroughly prepared and deliver a strong performance."
Labuschagne further stated he has no reservations about competing against Afghanistan in an ICC tournament, despite Cricket Australia opting not to engage in bilateral cricket with them due to restrictions on girls participating in sports.
"This is an ICC tournament, and according to the schedule, we are set to play against Afghanistan. Personally, I have no concerns about tomorrow’s game. However, Cricket Australia has made certain decisions in the past. Our focus is solely on our match against Afghanistan," Labuschagne concluded.
