Auckland, Feb 28 (NationPress) Bella James has been ruled out of the New Zealand women's ODI series against Sri Lanka due to a grade-two quadricep strain in her right leg. Her recovery process is anticipated to last between three to six weeks.
Lauren Down has been selected to fill James' spot in the ODI lineup, while a decision regarding James' fitness for the T20I series will be made based on her recovery progress.
James incurred the injury during her match with Otago against Central Districts in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, New Zealand's women's one-day cricket tournament. She made her ODI debut against Australia in Wellington last year, scoring 51 runs across two matches.
Head coach Ben Sawyer expressed his disappointment, stating, “We’re all devastated for Bella. She had a remarkable start to her international cricket journey in December, so it’s unfortunate that she misses this chance to build on that momentum. However, we’re hopeful she’ll be ready for the T20s,” Sawyer remarked.
Down currently ranks as Auckland's third-highest scorer in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, amassing 280 runs over ten games with an average of 31.11. The 29-year-old participated in the series against Australia and has competed in 35 ODIs, which Sawyer noted makes her a strong replacement.
“Lauren contributes significantly to the team. She’s been instrumental for the Hearts this season, and we’re delighted she’ll have the chance to continue her good form in this series,” Sawyer added.
The New Zealand ODI squad is set to gather in Napier on Sunday before their opening ODI at McLean Park on March 4.
