San Francisco, Sep 21 (NationPress) Taylor Fritz achieved a remarkable upset against Carlos Alcaraz during their Laver Cup encounter at the Chase Centre, marking his first victory over the reigning World No. 1 in four attempts. This win allowed Team World to extend their lead over Team Europe to 7-3.
Fritz started aggressively, applying consistent pressure on the Spaniard and clinching the match with scores of 6-3, 6-2 in straight sets. Last year, Alcaraz had previously defeated Fritz 6-2, 7-5 in Berlin, contributing to Team Europe’s 13-11 win.
Entering the match with an impressive 61-6 record this year, Fritz took the opportunity to deliver a decisive blow and give his team the advantage.
The match featured the presence of Swiss tennis icon Roger Federer and NBA star Steph Curry, who joined for the coin toss.
Fritz broke Alcaraz in the fourth game, taking an early lead to secure the first set. He successfully converted 66 percent of his first serves and made only six unforced errors, while Alcaraz committed nine.
In the second set, Fritz broke serve in the fifth game to go up 3-2. Two games later, he achieved another break and served out the match.
The American excelled at the net, winning 16 out of 20 points before sealing the match with a forehand volley.
“I knew what I needed to do. The challenge was whether I could execute. In my previous matches against Carlos, he’d broken me in the first game each time. Surviving that first game was critical. I made sure not to second-guess myself,” Fritz stated in a post-match interview.
“I always seem to play some of my best tennis at the Laver Cup. Having my teammates on the bench really motivates me,” he concluded.
