London, May 11 (NationPress) Crystal Palace Women have confirmed that manager Leif Smerud will be leaving the club after a challenging season that saw them finish at the bottom of the table in 12th place during the 2024-25 Women’s Super League (WSL).
In their final match of the season, despite scoring two impressive goals, Palace faced a resurgence from Manchester City, resulting in a disappointing 5-2 defeat.
Reflecting on his departure, Smerud stated, “While we didn’t achieve the results we aimed for, I take pride in the efforts we made together.”
He expressed his gratitude to Steve Parish and the board for their trust and the chance to lead the team.
Appointed on March 1, Smerud took over just hours after the dismissal of former manager Laura Kaminski.
The 48-year-old Norwegian brings a wealth of experience, having previously coached at both the women’s and men’s levels, including guiding Norway's men's Under-21s to their first U21 European Championship finals since 2023.
As a former Norway Under-21 international, Smerud began his coaching career while still playing professionally, including a brief stint as assistant coach for Norway Women, where he helped secure a bronze medal at the 2009 Women’s Euros.
“Following the end of the 2024/25 Women’s Super League season, Crystal Palace Women confirm that manager Leif Smerud will depart the club. An announcement regarding his successor will be made soon,” the club stated.
Palace concluded the WSL season with only two victories in 22 matches, recording 16 losses and four draws.
Chairman Steve Parish expressed his gratitude to Smerud for his contributions during a tough period for the club.
“Leif joined us during a challenging time, and we appreciate his professionalism and dedication. We wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Parish remarked.
