New Delhi, Jan 2 (NationPress) The BCCI has chosen not to comment on the involvement of Bangladesh players in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with insiders indicating that there has been no official communication from the government regarding this issue.
In light of discussions surrounding the acquisition of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman during last month’s IPL auction, BCCI insiders reiterated that no orders have been issued by the government to bar Bangladeshi players from participating in the league.
Rahman made history as the most expensive Bangladeshi player when the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) acquired him for Rs 9.20 crore at the recent mini-auction. His signing has ignited debate following reports of violent events against religious minorities in Bangladesh, leading some to question his participation in IPL 2026.
In response to the matter, a BCCI source remarked to IANS, “Let’s not delve into this. It is beyond our jurisdiction. We have not received any communication from the government instructing us to stop Bangladesh players from participating in the IPL… I can’t provide further comments at this time.”
Rahman, who has claimed 65 wickets in 60 IPL matches with an economy rate of 8.13, made his IPL debut with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016. He has also played for Mumbai Indians (2018), Rajasthan Royals (2021), Delhi Capitals (2022–23), and Chennai Super Kings (2024) before being released after the franchise's failure to qualify for playoffs. He returned to the Delhi Capitals last season as an injury replacement for Australian batter Jake Fraser-McGurk.
Previously, spiritual leader Devkinandan Thakur criticized KKR and its co-owner, Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, over Rahman’s signing, claiming it hurt Hindus and followers of Sanatan Dharma in light of reports of atrocities against Hindus in the neighboring nation.
The comments have elicited mixed responses from political figures across various parties, with many stressing that sports should remain distinct from political and diplomatic matters.
