Liam Scott eyes Australia recall across all three formats after Bangladesh debut
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Rising Australian all-rounder Liam Scott says he is confident in his ability to represent Australia across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, and is determined to force his way back into national contention after getting his first taste of international cricket during Australia's white-ball tour of Bangladesh earlier this year.
The Bangladesh Breakthrough
Scott made his ODI debut in Dhaka, picking up two wickets on a surface that tested visiting batters and bowlers alike. The call-up came on the back of a standout 2025/26 domestic season in which he was named the Sheffield Shield Player of the Year, accumulating 496 runs and 23 wickets. He also contributed 310 runs for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League.
What Scott Has Been Working On
Since returning from Bangladesh, Scott completed a county stint with Gloucestershire and has been making deliberate technical adjustments to sharpen his game. 'I think now I've had that taste. I just want to get back there and try and play as much cricket as I can for Australia,' he said. On the batting side, he has focused on playing spin more effectively and developing his power-hitting range. With the ball, he says minor technical refinements have helped him generate a little extra pace. 'Bowling-wise (it's) just little technical stuff that has allowed me to maybe pick up a little bit of pace. In saying that, I feel like what I've got is good enough,' Scott noted.
Why Opportunities Could Open Up Soon
Scott, who bats right-handed and bowls medium pace, believes Australia's packed 12-month schedule — featuring a minimum of 20 Tests alongside multiple white-ball series — increases the likelihood of selection openings. 'There's a few guys that are getting a tad older rather than getting younger, so there's probably going to be change and opportunities at some stage,' he said. He added that the volume of cricket across all formats means doors could open in any discipline. Notably, Australia's transition phase in both batting and bowling departments has been a recurring topic among selectors heading into a demanding international cycle.
Immediate Focus: South Australia Title Defence
Before any national recall, Scott's attention is fixed on helping South Australia defend their domestic first-class title when the new season begins next month. 'We've got a really really strong squad and I think we've seen the last couple of years we've been tested in terms of our depth,' he said. He highlighted the additions to the state squad as crucial to a potential back-to-back-to-back title run. 'Everyone here has one goal, and that's to win trophies for South Australia,' Scott concluded.
With domestic cricket about to resume and a crowded Australian international calendar ahead, Scott's form at state level over the coming months will be the key factor in whether selectors come calling again.
