Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 5 (NationPress) At the young age of 17, Lilli Tagger has established herself as a formidable contender in the 2026 Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series, having clinched a place in the tournament's quarterfinals hosted by the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA). As the seventh seed and holding a career-best ranking of World No. 128 in Women’s Singles, she triumphed over India’s Vaishnavi Adkar in straight sets during the Round of 32, setting her sights on a significant advancement in the competition.
In 2025, Lilli Tagger gained recognition by securing the Junior Roland Garros Singles title, marking her transition from a promising junior player to a serious contender on the professional stage. The Austrian teenager has continued to showcase her momentum on the WTA Tour, reflecting a level of maturity and consistency that surpasses her age.
During her inaugural visit to India, the young Austrian expressed how the experience has left a lasting impression on her. “This is my first time here in India, and it’s markedly different from European cities. It’s exceptionally special and intriguing. There’s so much to learn just by being here, and I’m eager to explore the city further,” she shared.
Lilli Tagger also commented on the playing surface and facilities at the MSLTA. “The courts are excellent. They are a bit slow, which presents a physical challenge, but that’s part of the game. The amenities at this venue are impressive, and the people are welcoming. This fosters a productive environment where we can prepare for our matches and learn from one another. The organizers have done an outstanding job,” she noted.
Tagger's rapid rise is supported by an unconventional journey. Raised in the mountains of Austria, she dedicated much of her childhood to skiing. Her introduction to tennis came through her grandmother's influence with ping pong, which ultimately led her to tennis. At just 14, she made the bold decision to leave home in pursuit of her tennis aspirations. “I was in Austria until I was 14, then I moved to Italy, near Venice, to train at an academy, and for the past two and a half years, I’ve been traveling on tour,” she recounted.
Discussing her ambitions and outlook for the Mumbai Open, she stated, “Naturally, the goal in every tournament is to aim for victory, but we prioritize the process and enhancing my game. While we can’t control the outcome, we can control the effort we invest.”
Lilli Tagger is set to compete against Japan’s Eri Shimizu in her Round of 16 match at the 2026 Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series on Thursday.
