Liverpool, Arsenal, and Newcastle Advance to Carabao Cup Semifinals

New Delhi, Dec 19 (NationPress) Goals from Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott propelled Liverpool into the Carabao Cup semifinals following a 2-1 triumph over Southampton.

Arne Slot’s squad established a two-goal lead by half-time, with Nunez finishing from close range, and Elliott concluding a well-executed play with a slight deflection.

The Reds’ advantage was narrowed just before the hour mark at St Mary’s when Cameron Archer scored a curling shot, but they managed to maintain their lead to clinch a place in the semifinals.

In another match, Gabriel Jesus netted a hat-trick, guiding Arsenal to a 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals on Thursday (IST).

Palace stunned the crowd by taking the lead with their first shot, courtesy of Jean-Philippe Mateta, who outmaneuvered Jakub Kiwior to score.

However, Arsenal’s substitutes Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka made an immediate impact in the second half, setting up opportunities for Jesus, who capitalized expertly.

Jesus completed his hat-trick when he was again assisted by Odegaard, firing his shot past Henderson to secure the win.

Eddie Nketiah cast doubt with an 85th-minute header for Palace during his return to the Emirates Stadium, but Arsenal held on to advance to the final four.

Meanwhile, Sandro Tonali’s two goals propelled Newcastle United into the Carabao Cup semifinals with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Brentford at St James’ Park.

Tonali's first goal since August 2023 put the hosts ahead early in the quarterfinal match, and his second goal, a volley from a corner taken by Anthony Gordon, doubled the lead before half-time.

Fabian Schar added another with a close-range finish in the second half, while Yoane Wissa’s stoppage-time goal was merely a consolation as Eddie Howe’s team secured a semifinal berth for the second time in three seasons.
