Liverpool, Aug 16 (NationPress) Liverpool's manager Arne Slot emphasized that there is absolutely no tolerance for racism in football, labeling the abusive behavior directed at Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo at Anfield as "inexcusable". The match between the defending champions and Bournemouth was briefly halted in the first half due to reports of "discriminatory abuse" aimed at Semenyo.
Referee Anthony Taylor informed both managers, Slot and Andoni Iraola, about the incident reported by the Ghanaian international Semenyo.
"I believe it is currently under investigation by the police, and the club has issued a strong statement regarding our stance on this matter. Sadly, we must address this issue, and it's a positive thing that we can discuss it. However, today should primarily celebrate Diogo and the tribute he received. Nonetheless, we must tackle this issue as it is unacceptable in any football venue, especially at Anfield. I spoke with Semenyo after the match and assured him that we would do everything possible to identify the individual responsible. While I cannot confirm, I believe they may have already located him, which is encouraging," Slot stated in the post-match press conference following a 4-2 victory.
The Premier League, alongside Liverpool and Bournemouth, condemned the incident and expressed full support for Semenyo.
"We denounce racism and discrimination in all its forms; it has no place in either society or football. The club cannot comment further as the alleged incident is currently under investigation by the police, which we will fully support," Liverpool stated.
"A remarkable player and an even greater human being. Only a resilient character can exhibit such strength in challenging circumstances. We stand with you, Antoine," Bournemouth shared on X.
The Premier League's statement noted, "Tonight's match between Liverpool Football Club and AFC Bournemouth was momentarily paused in the first half following a report of discriminatory abuse from the stands directed at Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo.
"This aligns with the Premier League's on-field anti-discrimination protocol. The incident at Anfield will undergo a thorough investigation. We offer our complete support to the player and both clubs. Racism has no place in our sport or anywhere in society.
"We will continue collaborating with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums remain inclusive and welcoming for all."
