Plymouth, Feb 9 (NationPress) Head coach Arne Slot remarked that the unexpected departure from the FA Cup ‘hurts Liverpool’ following his team's 0-1 defeat to Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Sunday.
The match was decided by a second-half penalty from Ryan Hardie after Harvey Elliott was deemed to have handled the ball within his own penalty area.
"It affects everyone associated with Liverpool. Our fans, myself, and the players. We aimed to stay in this competition for as long as possible. They battled until the very last moment, with our only chances coming in the final 10 to 15 minutes. This was not an issue of work rate.
“They exerted great effort, but we struggled to create opportunities. We must maintain the same work rate but also enhance our creativity in the forthcoming matches," Slot told ITV.
This loss against Plymouth also signifies the Dutch head coach’s first defeat in cup tournaments.
Plymouth, currently at the bottom of England’s second division at 24th place in the EFL Championship, became the first team to eliminate Liverpool from the competition while they were leading the table since January 1984 against Brighton.
Slot acknowledged that Liverpool’s unexpected defeat was ‘justified’ due to the spirited display from the home side.
"Plymouth played excellently. Their game plan was effective. They deserve all the recognition for their performance today. We didn’t perform well, and this result reflects that.
"I can’t say the players didn’t fight because they put in 100 minutes of effort. Both teams created few chances, and the match was ultimately determined by a penalty, which was rightly awarded as [Elliott] had his arms above his head.
"In matches like this, where opportunities are scarce, it often comes down to a single moment, and today that moment favored them. As I mentioned, they earned it with a truly commendable performance," he continued.
Liverpool will aim to recover from this setback as they prepare to face Everton in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Thursday (IST). A victory for Slot’s team will put them nine points ahead of Arsenal in the standings.
