Maitlan Brown Excited for Potential International Debut in Test Against India
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 4 (NationPress) Maitlan Brown is looking forward to making a significant impression at the WACA Ground this week. Although she may not achieve her first international cap in the upcoming pink-ball Test against India, which begins this Friday in Perth, the fast bowler is excited about her return to the Australian team.
The 28-year-old was called up as a last-minute substitute after Kim Garth was injured with a quad issue. This inclusion marks Brown's first appearance in an Australian squad since 2021, a testament to her impressive domestic season where she has consistently showcased her speed.
"It's been incredibly thrilling," Brown shared on the Scoop Podcast shortly after touching down in Perth on Tuesday. "Receiving that call – when I noticed (national selector) Shawn Flegler's name on my phone, I knew something significant was happening when 'Flegs' called. It’s heartening to feel that all my hard work is truly being recognized, and I’m immensely proud. Regardless of whether I get to play or not, this is a fantastic opportunity, and I’m just thrilled to be back in the team,” she expressed.
There is tough competition for a spot in the playing XI. Brown is anticipated to vie for a position alongside seasoned bowler Darcie Brown, who is not her relative, and young left-arm seamer Lucy Hamilton, who debuted in ODIs just last weekend.
After being notified in January that she was on standby for the Test, Brown worked diligently to maintain her training and readiness for a potential call-up.
“I was informed prior to this tour that I was on standby, so I’ve focused on my training and ensured that my workload was substantial, just in case I received the call. (If selected) I just have to trust the physical preparation I’ve completed during the preseason and throughout this season,” Brown commented, indicating her confidence in being ready if chosen.
The multi-format series currently favors the home team, with Australia leading 8-4. Despite India clinching the three-game T20I series 2-1, giving them a 4-2 lead, Australia managed to sweep the World Champions 3-0 in the three-match ODI series, accumulating six points and taking the lead over the visitors.
Australia will secure the multi-format series if they either draw or win the Test. Should India win the pink-ball Test, the series will be tied at 8-8, resulting in a shared trophy between both nations.
