New Delhi, May 24 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has described the selection of India's Test squad for the forthcoming England tour as “odd”. He has encouraged supporters to exercise patience as Shubman Gill steps into the role of red-ball captain during what he refers to as a “significant transition”.

India is set to play five Test matches against England, commencing June 20, heralding a new chapter following the retirements of cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the longest format of the game.

“The team selection is peculiar overall. However, India heads to England with nothing at stake. It’s a squad in transition, so we can only wish them the very best & indeed, show patience while we await the results,” Manjrekar shared on social media.

At just 25, Gill becomes India’s fifth-youngest Test captain, joining the ranks of illustrious figures such as Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, and Ravi Shastri. His leadership capabilities were evident during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, where he guided the Gujarat Titans to the playoffs. Nevertheless, his Test captaincy debut arrives amidst challenging English conditions.

Alongside Gill in the refreshed squad are talented left-hander Sai Sudharsan, returning player Karun Nair, and left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh, who earns his first Test call-up. Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan praised the selections while expressing concern over the absence of pace spearhead Mohammed Shami due to injury.

“Congratulations to Sai Sudharsan, Arshdeep Singh, and Karun Nair for being chosen for the ultimate format and the demanding English summer,” he remarked.

However, he also highlighted the absence of injured pace spearhead Mohammed Shami, whose experience could have been invaluable in the seaming English conditions. “Kudos to Shubman Gill… But India will undoubtedly miss Mohammed Shami’s contributions in those scenarios,” Pathan commented.

Gill has garnered support from former players like Harbhajan Singh and IPL franchises, including his own Gujarat Titans. Harbhajan tweeted, “Congrats @ShubmanGill. Wishing you success in England.”

IPL teams also celebrated Gill’s new position. Royal Challengers Bengaluru tweeted: “Congratulations, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, it’s your moment to shine. Go on, establish your legacy!”

His own team, Gujarat Titans, proudly declared, “The commencement of a new Test era! Our Captain, now #TeamIndia’s Test Skipper!”

Point of View

I believe this selection marks a crucial turning point for Indian cricket. With Shubman Gill at the helm, it's vital to embrace a spirit of patience and encouragement. While the absence of seasoned players like Mohammed Shami is concerning, this transition phase is an opportunity for new talents to emerge and shine on an international stage. We should remain supportive and hopeful during this transformation.
