New Delhi, July 11 (NationPress) The dynamic fast bowler Mayank Yadav is set to embark on an extensive rehabilitation journey in the coming weeks at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) located in Bengaluru, following a successful surgical procedure addressing his back problems in Christchurch, New Zealand.
According to IANS, on June 2, the esteemed orthopedic spine surgeon, Dr. Rowan Schouten, performed the operation on Mayank, who had to withdraw from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 due to recurring back issues.
“Indeed, Mayank returned to India last week after his surgery in New Zealand. The procedure, conducted by Dr. Schouten, involved the L5 vertebra on both sides. Once the initial healing period concludes, Mayank is anticipated to commence his comprehensive rehabilitation at the CoE in the upcoming weeks. Currently, there are no definite timelines for his recovery and rehab since there will be no rush in his case,” informed sources close to the situation to IANS on Friday.
Dr. Schouten has previously operated on Indian fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna for similar back-related issues in 2023, in addition to conducting surgeries for Australian bowlers Jason Behrendorff and James Pattinson.
Last year, Dr. Schouten, in collaboration with surgeon Grahame Inglis, performed surgery on Australian all-rounder Cameron Green after he sustained a stress fracture in his lower back. Injuries have plagued New Delhi-based Mayank since he hit speeds of 150 kmph and earned Player of the Match accolades in his first two IPL 2024 matches for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
After a side injury limited his IPL 2024 appearances to just four games, Mayank underwent rehabilitation at the CoE (then known as the National Cricket Academy) before making his international debut in three T20Is against Bangladesh in October 2024. Unfortunately, he was later ruled out of the 2024/25 domestic season due to a back stress issue.
His return to IPL 2025 with LSG, who retained him ahead of last year’s mega auction, faced delays due to a toe infection after he accidentally kicked his bed. After joining the LSG squad on April 16, Mayank participated in only two matches against Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS), where his pace was noticeably slower compared to his impressive speeds in 2024, relying on slower deliveries and their variations.
After a ten-day pause in IPL 2025 due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, Mayank was ruled out of LSG’s campaign again due to the resurfacing of his back injury, leading the franchise to enlist New Zealand pacer Will O’Rourke as his substitute.
“Currently, everything seems encouraging as Mayank reports no back pain, which was a significant concern previously. There is optimism that he will gradually return to the field if his recovery and extended rehab proceed as planned by the CoE medical team,” sources added.
