McGrath Supports Starc in His Quest for Fitness Ahead of Sydney Test

Sydney, Jan 1 (NationPress) Australian cricket icon Glenn McGrath is confident that Mitchell Starc will do everything possible to achieve match fitness for the vital New Year’s Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), commencing January 3.

Starc has been dealing with rib and back discomfort during the Boxing Day Test. The 34-year-old, an essential component of Australia’s pace attack, was observed pushing through the discomfort to assist his team in securing victory in the Boxing Day Test.

“The decision will rest with Mitch and the higher authorities (whether he plays). He will leave no stone unturned to be out there on the pitch. He is such a significant figure in this Australian squad, and when he is at his best, he ranks among the finest players,” McGrath stated.

“He’s been bowling exceptionally well. Let’s hope he has recovered sufficiently and can participate in this Test,” McGrath was quoted as saying by Fox Cricket.

Starc has emerged as a key player for Australia this summer, taking 15 wickets at an average of 28.73 across four Tests. His rib and back issues led to precautionary scans after the Melbourne Test, raising concerns about his availability for the SCG showdown.

Reports indicate that Starc’s participation in the series finale will hinge on his ability to manage the pain and whether the team management considers him fit to play.

“Australia will aim to field their strongest team... I sincerely hope Mitchell Starc is on the field come day one,” McGrath added.

The fifth Test at the SCG, well-known as the Pink Test in support of breast cancer awareness, holds profound significance for the Australian cricket community.

While Australia currently leads the series 2-1, India requires a victory in Sydney to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which they have possessed since 2017.
