Miami, March 31 (NationPress) Jakub Mensik triumphed over rain and a legendary rival as he shocked six-time champion Novak Djokovic with a score of 7-6(4), 7-6(4) to claim the Miami Open title.
The 19-year-old Czech athlete prevented Djokovic from securing his 100th tour-level title, becoming the second youngest champion in the tournament's history, following Carlos Alcaraz, who won the trophy at 18 in 2022.
"Honestly, I am at a loss for words. It feels absolutely amazing. This is probably the highlight of my life, and I am thrilled with my performance and how I managed to maintain my composure before the match. I am just extremely happy, and I believe the emotions will sink in later," Mensik expressed during his on-court interview.
"I have faced Novak before," said Mensik, who had previously lost to his idol in the Shanghai quarterfinals last year. "There is no greater challenge in tennis than defeating him in a final. However, I felt fantastic, and it was my moment, so I focused on the match just as I did in earlier rounds."
Mensik also made history as the first player from the Czech Republic to win an ATP Masters 1000 event since Tomas Berdych claimed victory in Paris in 2005.
"This is Jakub's moment — a moment for his team and family. Congratulations on an incredible tournament. It pains me to admit it, but you were superior! In crucial moments, you executed flawlessly with extraordinary serving and an impressive mental performance during tough times," Djokovic acknowledged.
The match faced a delay of nearly six hours due to rain in Florida, during which Djokovic struggled with an issue under his right eye, reaching for it and using eye drops during changeovers, according to ATP reports.
Mensik was born in September 2005 when Djokovic was already within the Top 100 of the ATP Rankings. The 18-year age difference between them represents the largest gap in an ATP Masters 1000 final.
