Doha, Feb 19 (NationPress) Former world No. 1 Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic chose not to make any excuses following his straight sets loss to Matteo Berrettini at the Qatar Open, an ATP 500 event, emphasizing that the Italian delivered a masterclass performance to outshine him.

Berrettini showcased an exceptional game to triumph over the third seed Serbian 7-6(4), 6-2 at the ATP 500, marking his first win against a Top 10 player since January 2023. This defeat also represented Djokovic's initial opening-round loss since April 2022.

Returning to the court for the first time since retiring from his Australian Open semi-final match against Alexander Zverev in January due to a hamstring injury, Djokovic expressed, “I didn't experience any pain or discomfort. I was simply outplayed by a better player today. While I wasn't at my optimal level, I played without pain, so there are no excuses.”

He continued, “He was simply the superior player. I believe he played a masterclass match tactically and served exceptionally well, so it was a very deserved victory for him.”

Djokovic, a two-time champion in Doha, had previously secured a gold medal at the Paris Olympics last season but was unable to add another title this season. This marks the first year since 2017 that the 99-time tour-level champion has not captured a major title.

The 37-year-old holds a 7-3 record in 2025. Djokovic acknowledged in his post-match press conference that he plans to collaborate with Andy Murray until at least the end of the clay swing, expressing his commitment to work hard for future titles.

“I strive to enhance my game like everyone else. However, my core style will remain unchanged. I may incorporate some serve and volley, but my fundamental game will stay the same. I will adapt based on the surface I’m playing on and other factors,” he stated.

“Injuries are more prevalent now. Things aren't the same as they were 10 or 15 years ago. I still make it a point to take care of my body daily, and it’s undoubtedly more challenging now. However, I continue to do my utmost under the circumstances,” said the 24-time major winner.

Djokovic’s next appearance is scheduled at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells, where he has celebrated victory five times in California.
