New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu shared her deep appreciation after being elected as the Chairperson of the Athletes’ Commission of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF).

Chanu, one of India's most celebrated weightlifters, will be joined by Sathish Kumar, a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist, who has been appointed as the Vice-Chairperson of the Commission. Their tenure will span four years, during which they aim to act as a liaison between the athletes and the governing body.

"I am immensely grateful to the Indian Weightlifting Federation for selecting me as the Chairperson of the Athletes Commission. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Sahdev Yadav Sir for placing his trust in me, and I also appreciate the committee members for their unanimous support," expressed Mirabai Chanu.

"It is a profound honor to represent and advocate for the voices of my fellow weightlifters. I also want to thank my coach Vijay Sir for his unwavering support throughout the years. I am committed to embracing the responsibilities of this role earnestly. I will strive to amplify the athletes' voices and perspectives across all significant platforms, ensuring we can remain focused on the sport without external distractions."

The 29-year-old Chanu’s appointment marks a pivotal moment in Indian weightlifting. With her achievements, including a silver medal at Tokyo 2020 and a World Championship gold in 2017, she brings unparalleled experience and leadership to the Commission. Her national records in the 49kg category, with impressive lifts of 88kg in snatch and 119kg in clean and jerk, further underscore her legacy.

Sathish, who lifted a total of 317kg to secure gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, builds on his previous triumph in Glasgow in 2014. His experience will be vital as the IWLF aims to enhance athlete representation and welfare.
