Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) Iconic Indian cricketer Mithali Raj has praised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for its pivotal role in revolutionizing women's cricket after she was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the recent annual awards ceremony.
Mithali concluded her international cricket career in 2022 as the leading run-scorer in women's cricket history, having participated in 12 Tests, 232 ODIs, and 89 T20Is over a remarkable 23-year span. “Numerous individuals played crucial roles in my journey, beyond just my parents. I've received substantial support from coaches, fellow players, and various mentors,” she stated.
“As a sport, I've observed the progression of women's cricket, and there are several individuals I must acknowledge. The BCCI has been instrumental, and the backing of Jay Shah has been significant. In the past 4-5 years, the Indian women's cricket team has undergone a remarkable transformation, largely due to his vision.”
“His dedication and vision extend beyond our nation; he has made considerable efforts to elevate and promote the profile of women's cricket on a global stage. This commitment illustrates his visionary nature and dedication to the cause, and the results are evident,” Mithali expressed in a video shared by the BCCI on Monday.
She further highlighted the recent achievements of Indian cricket across all levels and genders as a source of immense pride. “In the last 2-3 years, Indian cricket, including men's and women's teams as well as the under-19 squads, has excelled remarkably, making it a proud moment for me as a former player to witness the growth of Indian cricket. I've always aspired for Indian cricket to be at the forefront, and now that time has arrived.”
Mithali reflected on how she drew inspiration from legendary players like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid during her playing days. “Progress takes time. Women's cricket has its own path, just like men's cricket. We have drawn considerable inspiration from our male counterparts.”
“I've found motivation from Rahul and Sachin, as they've always engaged with me at the NCA or COE, sharing insights about sports and batting. Their advice and suggestions were invaluable during my playing days. This interaction between male and female cricketers is beneficial, as we strive to meet the standards set by men's cricket,” she added.
“As I said, it is a moment to sit back and take pride in the evolution of women's cricket and to see the current generation playing a bold brand of cricket and bringing home trophies. As I walked through the event, I noticed four or five trophies, which was wonderful to see,” she concluded.
