New Delhi, July 24 (NationPress) Mohun Bagan Super Giant have officially announced the acquisition of Indian full-back Abhishek Singh Tekcham from Punjab FC on a four-year contract in anticipation of the forthcoming Indian Super League (ISL) season.
This significant transfer was clinched by Mohun Bagan, who outpaced their fierce competitors, East Bengal and FC Goa, that were also interested in securing the 22-year-old's talents. With Abhishek's transfer fee exceeding Rs 6 crore, both rivals decided to withdraw, allowing Mohun Bagan to acquire the promising defender.
“When history calls, you answer in Green and Maroon,” the ISL champions stated on X, welcoming their new signing.
After a successful season that saw Mohun Bagan capture both the ISL Shield and Cup, they parted ways with Ashique Kuruniyan, creating an opportunity for Abhishek to take on the left wing-back position. He also possesses the versatility to play on the right side, increasing competition for Asish Rai.
Discussing his move to Mohun Bagan, Abhishek remarked, “I had offers from several major clubs across the country. However, the reason I chose Mohun Bagan Super Giant is that it is the premier club in India. You earn championships at Mohun Bagan. You collect trophies. You pursue dreams. Their ongoing success inspired my decision to join. This club consistently competes for titles. I also aspire to win championships while donning this jersey.”
Abhishek had an impressive 2024–25 ISL season with Punjab FC, featuring in 22 matches, creating eight scoring opportunities, and showcasing his energetic style and robust defense, winning 86 duels and eight aerial confrontations. His outstanding performances led to a call-up to the Indian senior national team under coach Manolo Marquez.
“While representing Punjab, I achieved victory in the I-League. However, I have yet to claim the top competitions in India - the ISL and the Shield. I hope to realize that dream by playing for Mohun Bagan,” he expressed.
“Many premier stars of Indian football are present here. Training and playing alongside them will enhance my skills. Although I have represented India, my goal is to participate in the AFC Championship. That is a dream I wish to realize.”
