Will Catching Be the Key Factor in the T20 World Cup 2026 as Morkel Addresses India's Fielding Issues?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Feb 20 (NationPress) Morne Morkel, the bowling coach for India, has acknowledged that catching will be essential during the critical phases of the T20 World Cup 2026. The team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, is eager to improve their fielding performance following a number of missed opportunities in the tournament, as they head into the Super 8s where they will compete against the 2024 World Cup runners-up, South Africa, at the Narendra Modi Stadium this Sunday.
Although both the batting and bowling departments have shown reliability, the defending champions face challenges with their fielding as they approach the knockout stages.
Throughout the group phase, India has faltered in the field, having dropped nine catches over four matches, ranking them second for the most dropped catches among all 20 participating teams. Only the Ireland cricket team has surpassed this with 10 dropped chances, while Namibia follows with six.
When asked about the growing concern regarding catching, Morkel underscored the need to enhance fielding techniques.
“That’s a pertinent question. We put considerable effort into our fielding practices. We are acutely aware of how vital catches are, and we constantly work on minimizing angles to prevent runs,” Morkel stated in a press briefing leading up to the South Africa match.
“Catching will undeniably be a significant factor now as we reach the tournament's business end. Every catch poses its own challenges, but our players are committed to putting in the necessary work and catching plenty of balls,” he emphasized.
Morkel further noted that capitalizing on half-chances could greatly influence the results of high-stakes matches. “One of our focal points is to seize those 50-50 opportunities, understanding how pivotal they can be in altering a batting team's momentum,” he added.
As India enters the Super 8s unbeaten in the group stage, they aim to maintain their winning streak.
