Istanbul, Feb 28 (NationPress) The manager of Turkish football club Fenerbahce, Jose Mourinho, has received a four-match suspension and a fine totaling £35,194 due to statements made following Monday’s match against local rivals Galatasaray.

Galatasaray accused the 62-year-old coach of making racist remarks after the Istanbul derby.

In his comments after the match, Mourinho stated that the Galatasaray bench was “jumping like monkeys” following an early challenge and also mentioned that the match was better officiated by Slovenian Slavko Vincic instead of Turkish referees, as both teams had requested a foreign official.

However, Fenerbahce responded by claiming that Mourinho's remarks were intentionally taken out of context and misrepresented.

Despite this, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) confirmed that Mourinho would face penalties for two distinct disciplinary issues.

TFF's statement indicated that Mourinho was penalized with a ban and a fine of 117,000 TL for “entering the dressing room where the match referees were, approaching the match referee, and making derogatory comments towards both the Turkish football community and all Turkish referees, thereby insulting the integrity of football in Turkey.”

As reported by the BBC, Fenerbahce officials announced that the club intends to appeal the sanctions imposed on Mourinho.

The Portuguese coach also allegedly “accused Turkish football of chaos and disorder” with disrespectful comments towards both the Turkish football community and referees.

In relation to his comments during the post-match press conference, Mourinho was given an additional two-match suspension for “an act against sportsmanship” and fined £32,651.

TFF noted, “Given the nature of the comments, it was concluded that the statements aimed at the opposing team members were unnecessary, against the ethics of sports, and could potentially incite violence and disorder in sports, thereby violating the principles of fair play. This act was deemed an infringement of sportsmanship, especially as it occurred during a press conference.”
