Mumbai, March 29 (NationPress) In a stunning display of skill, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton delivered impressive half-centuries, propelling the Mumbai Indians to a commanding six-wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. This victory marks the end of a dismal 13-season streak of losing their opening match.

After Shardul Thakur shone with 3-39, successfully stifling a robust KKR led by Ajinkya Rahane (67) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (51), Rohit Sharma delivered a phenomenal 78 runs off just 38 balls, while Rickelton contributed 81 runs off 43 balls. Together, they guided the Mumbai Indians to a total of 224/4 in 19.1 overs, clinching their first season-opening win since 2012.

This performance saw a nostalgic return to form for Rohit Sharma, leading many to wonder about his future in T20 after stepping back from international duties. He achieved a remarkable 23-ball fifty, the fastest of his IPL career, featuring three fours and five sixes, setting a stellar pace for his team. Additionally, he joined the elite club of batters with 50-plus scores in IPL history.

With this match, Rohit celebrated his 50th half-century in 268 IPL matches, entering a prestigious list alongside Virat Kohli (73 in 261 matches), David Warner (66 in 184), and Shikhar Dhawan (53 in 221).

After a slow start, where Rohit managed just 12 runs off eight balls, he unleashed a flurry of boundaries against KKR's bowlers. He first sent a delivery from Vaibhav Arora into the stands before his teammate Rickelton matched him with consecutive sixes off the same bowler.

The momentum continued as Rohit hit a series of sixes, showcasing his prowess by lofting balls over deep points and covers, helping the Mumbai Indians to a stunning 80 without loss during the Power-play.

Rickelton mirrored Rohit by reaching his fifty in just 24 balls, hitting two fours and six sixes, matching his partner blow for blow.

After reaching his fifty, Rohit added three more fours and one six before being dismissed in the 12th over while attempting a slog sweep off Arora. Anukul Roy executed a spectacular catch while diving back from mid-on. Rohit ended with a stellar 78 runs, comprised of six boundaries and as many sixes, forming a remarkable opening partnership of 148 runs with Rickelton off just 72 balls.

Despite Suryakumar Yadav, a T20 World Cup-winning star, not contributing significantly after coming in as an Impact Substitute for Jasprit Bumrah (scoring 16 off eight), Rickelton continued to dominate KKR until he was run out for 81, following a brilliant direct hit from Anukul Roy, leaving Mumbai at 184/3 in the 16th over and well on their way to victory.

Though Tilak Varma fell for 20 while attempting to secure victory with a big shot, Hardik Pandya (18 not out) helped seal the win with a four in the final over.

KKR's captain Rahane faced difficulties in the field after leaving due to cramps.
