IPL 2026: KKR coach Nayar backs 'control the controllables' approach vs DC
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar on 23 May urged his side to 'keep things quite simple' and focus only on what they can control ahead of their high-stakes IPL 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals (DC), saying preparation and consistency outweigh any anxiety over outcomes at this point in the season.
The Playoff Equation
KKR's path to the playoffs is narrow but alive. After losing six of their first seven matches — one of the worst starts by a defending-era franchise in recent IPL memory — the three-time champions engineered a stunning reversal, winning six of their next seven games. To advance, KKR must beat DC and simultaneously hope that both Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) lose their respective fixtures. It is a combination that leaves little room for error.
Nayar on the Team's Mindset
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Nayar was measured and deliberate in his messaging. 'I try to keep things quite simple and focus on controlling the controllables. Often, when you come to this stage of the tournament, you think about the fact that if things are meant to be, they will happen,' he said. He added that the consequences were 'out of our control' and that the team's only job was to 'walk out tomorrow and play the best cricket we can.'
Nayar stressed that the standard of preparation does not change regardless of what is at stake. 'Whenever you are representing a franchise, whenever you are playing in the IPL, that preparation remains the same. So, more than nervousness, I think the focus is on preparation and playing good cricket tomorrow,' he said.
What Sparked the Turnaround
Asked about the catalyst behind KKR's mid-season revival, Nayar pointed squarely to consistency in leadership messaging and unwavering trust in the playing group. 'The messaging did not change much. The trust in the players did not change. The way we looked at our players did not change,' he explained.
He acknowledged the psychological weight of a difficult run. 'When everything around you starts to feel like it is crumbling, you have to stay strong and stick to your core values as a team and as individuals. Sometimes, it takes time for people to understand their roles and what the team is trying to achieve,' Nayar said. He added that once momentum begins to build, belief follows — and that remaining consistent as an individual 'amid all the noise' is the hardest challenge in the IPL.
Respecting Delhi Capitals
On the opposition, Nayar was careful not to underestimate DC. 'Any opponent in the IPL is a strong opponent. All teams are beautifully balanced. They have the best players in the world, the best Indian players, and young cricketers eager to make a name for themselves,' he said. He maintained that KKR would assess and respect the opposition while staying true to their own game plan, noting that 'the team that plays better cricket usually wins.'
With everything riding on a single result and external scorecards beyond their control, KKR will look to Nayar's philosophy of process over pressure when they take the field against Delhi Capitals.
