Delhi Capitals assistant coach Ian Bell on 23 May 2026 said the mood inside the DC camp is firmly positive ahead of their must-win IPL 2026 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, even as he candidly acknowledged that inconsistency has been the defining flaw of their season.

Team Spirit Intact Despite Pressure

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Bell painted an upbeat picture of the dressing room despite the high-stakes situation. Delhi Capitals sit eighth on the standings with 12 points and need not only a sizeable win over KKR but also favourable results elsewhere to keep their playoff hopes alive.

'We've had a couple of down days, and the guys have trained really well yesterday. The spirits are good. Obviously, we know there's a big game tonight and a big game before us tomorrow,' Bell said. He added that the character within the squad had held the group together through the season's highs and lows: 'The atmosphere around the group is brilliant. Certainly through the playing group, there's some really good characters that have stuck together through some highs and lows, so it's in a positive way.'

Respect for a Resurgent KKR

Bell was candid about the quality of the opposition, acknowledging that Kolkata Knight Riders have hit form in the second half of the season. 'Another class team, isn't it? Obviously, we're on the wrong end of a bad result at home against KKR,' he said.

Having worked with Finn Allen previously, Bell knows the KKR line-up well and singled out Sunil Narine as a key threat. 'We know the qualities they have with Narine. All the way through their team is world-class players, so we know we have to turn up tomorrow and put in a really good performance, probably one of our best performances of the season so far,' he said.

Inconsistency: The Season's Missing Link

Bell was unflinching in his self-assessment of where DC have fallen short. He pointed to a glaring swing in results — posting 265 in one match and then being bowled out for 70 in another — as emblematic of the problem. 'I think most teams will say that, the teams that aren't in the top four are down to consistency,' he noted.

'There have been times when we've been brilliant, and then there have been times when we haven't been good enough. We know in the IPL, when you have your opportunities against these teams, you have to take them, and I think that's probably where we have to be honest and say we haven't taken those key moments,' Bell added.

He pointed specifically to the last-ball defeat against Gujarat Titans and the failure to defend 265 against Punjab Kings as matches that, had they gone differently, would have placed DC in contention for the top two. 'You turn those into wins, and suddenly, if we win tomorrow, we're on 18 points and looking at the top two,' he said.

The Fine Margins of IPL Cricket

Bell drew a parallel between IPL pressure and Test cricket, arguing that the margins separating success from failure are razor-thin at this level. 'The margins are so small in IPL, and that's why, as a coach and as a player, you want to be in this league because you're in the highest pressure against the best players in the world,' he said.

He acknowledged that DC have at times failed to press home advantages — a habit he likened to not 'seeing the game through' in the manner top sides do. Bell indicated that consistency would be a priority area heading into the 2027 season, even as the focus for now remains on Sunday's game at Eden Gardens.
