New Delhi, June 25 (NationPress) After spending two seasons in Uttar Pradesh, left-handed batter Nitish Rana is poised to make a return to his home state of Delhi for the upcoming 2025/26 domestic cricket season.
Previously, Rana had captained Delhi in various domestic competitions before his transfer to Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2023/24 season.
Reports from IANS suggest that Rana's potential return to Delhi follows his absence from the player auction for the upcoming season of the UP T20 League. "Yes, Nitish Rana has applied for an NOC, and approval is expected in the coming days," sources noted.
Considering he is not a domicile player, he might evaluate his options on a seasonal basis as a guest player. According to the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA), "We must also confirm with guest players regarding their availability from season to season, allowing them flexibility to move between teams."
Rana had a challenging stint with Uttar Pradesh during the 2024/25 domestic season, scoring only 111 runs in nine matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and a mere 17 runs in two Vijay Hazare Trophy games before being dropped. His performance in the Ranji Trophy wasn't much better either, where he totaled 150 runs across four matches before facing exclusion.
Interestingly, Rana's likely rejoining of the Delhi squad comes just weeks ahead of the second season of the Delhi Premier League (DPL). Although there is no official confirmation from the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) regarding his return, skepticism remains among cricket circles.
“Two years ago, he departed when Delhi needed him and requests were made. Now, after not being selected for Uttar Pradesh, he aims to return to Delhi. One must consider that he needs to earn his place back in the Delhi team,” a source told IANS.
Having represented India in one ODI and two T20Is, Rana's IPL 2025 season with the Rajasthan Royals was disappointing, scoring just 217 runs in 11 matches before being sidelined due to a calf injury. Notably, during last year's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy quarter-finals, Rana was involved in a heated altercation with Delhi captain Ayush Badoni, which necessitated intervention from on-field umpires.
