London, May 5 (NationPress) Chelsea's head coach Enzo Maresca has shared an update regarding Christopher Nkunku, who was absent once more during the Premier League clash against Liverpool on Sunday after sustaining an injury during training earlier this week. Maresca disclosed that the forward is expected to be sidelined for 10 to 15 days due to this injury.
Chelsea's aspirations for a spot in the UEFA Champions League received a boost following their 3-1 triumph over the reigning champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.
"Christo will be unavailable for, I believe, one week or two weeks; we are uncertain. We will reassess. He will be out for the next ten to fifteen days," stated Maresca.
There is a possibility that Nkunku may exit Chelsea at the close of the season, implying he might have already played his final match for the club.
Following the victory against Liverpool, Chelsea holds the fifth position but has secured a three-point lead over sixth-placed Nottingham Forest, who will face Crystal Palace on Monday. Chelsea is also tied on points with Newcastle United, currently in fourth place, whom they are set to confront at St James' Park next weekend.
The competition for the five Champions League spots remains intensely competitive after another thrilling weekend of results.
The top two teams, Liverpool and Arsenal, both faced defeats this weekend, while Newcastle United managed to secure a draw against Brighton & Hove Albion with a last-minute penalty. Meanwhile, Manchester City and Aston Villa each achieved 1-0 victories against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham, respectively.
This scenario leaves just seven points between Nottingham Forest in sixth and Villa in seventh, and the Gunners in third.
"I sense that – and I have felt this for a long time while working with the players every day – they are all aligned and moving in the same direction, both in terms of our playing style and fostering the right culture. This is crucial," Maresca expressed.
