Leeds, June 18 (NationPress) As India prepares for a highly anticipated five-match Test series against England commencing on June 20 at Headingley, vice-captain Rishabh Pant has asserted that his game plan remains steadfast.
“Personally, I am in a good head space,” Pant conveyed during a pre-match press conference. “Whenever I play cricket, I aim to contribute from my side, whether it’s batting, fielding, or wicket keeping. This is the mindset I maintain, and nothing shifts for me as I arrive in England.”
Pant, who is expected to retain his position at No. 5 in the batting order, also announced a significant adjustment — newly-appointed captain Shubman Gill will now bat at No. 4, filling the void left by Virat Kohli’s retirement.
“I believe discussions are ongoing regarding who will play at No. 3,” Pant stated. “However, the positions at four and five are confirmed. Shubman will bat at number four, and I will remain at number five for now.”
The No. 4 position, historically occupied by Indian legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, is now entrusted to Gill, who will bear the weight of history while also leading India as Test captain for the first time in a full series.
Pant, having shared the dressing room with Gill for numerous years, believes their off-field friendship will positively impact them in high-pressure situations. “Shubman and I share a strong camaraderie, especially off the field,” he remarked. “If you’re good friends off the field, that chemistry translates onto the pitch. We bond well, and the comfort we have with each other will be special.”
With a new leadership team taking charge and several young talents likely to make the playing XI, India embarks on a fresh chapter in its Test journey. Yet for Pant, whose mentality remains unyielding, the objective is clear: contribute in every conceivable way.
