Abu Dhabi, Sep 20 (NationPress) Oman’s captain Jatinder Singh has made a heartfelt request to India and other leading cricketing nations to provide enhanced support to Associate teams, following his squad's commendable performance in their debut at the Asia Cup.
Competing against India for the first time in any format, Oman challenged the world's top-ranked T20I team in Abu Dhabi, ultimately losing by a close margin of 21 runs.
"If we could have India welcoming us, allowing us to train as if it were our home... If we can practice at the NCAs, refine our skills, improve our mental resilience, focus on fitness, and engage in numerous T20 matches against club and Ranji teams, that would indeed help us bridge the gap," Jatinder stated after the match.
Though Oman has participated in World Cups previously, this was their initial experience in the Asia Cup, a tournament with a rich history dating back to the 1980s. Jatinder emphasized the significance of this exposure and advocated for more chances for Associate countries to compete with the sport's elite.
"As an Associate nation, we seldom have the opportunity to play against Test-playing countries," he remarked. "We are incredibly fortunate to have had this platform. I am proud of the boys for demonstrating such character in challenging circumstances.
"Tournaments like this, if held regularly, should include more Associate nations, allowing them to compete and reduce the gap between Test-playing and Associate countries."
Jatinder also highlighted the common oversight of Omani players in franchise leagues, which limits their chances for growth through experience. "Omani players are just as capable as anyone else. We lack the platforms to participate in franchise cricket. If they are given opportunities in such tournaments, the boys will gain invaluable experience and can subsequently coach others in Oman accordingly."
Reflecting on his team’s commendable display against India, Jatinder expressed pride in the resilience shown under pressure. "In T20 cricket, anything is possible. Any team can triumph over another. I felt the boys had their strategies in place and were close to achieving their goals. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the performance of each individual, be it in bowling, fielding, or batting. Our early lack of partnerships highlighted our growth potential for critical matches."
Looking ahead to the upcoming T20 World Cup qualifiers in Oman, Jatinder expressed enthusiasm about building on this experience. "I am thrilled and proud of our unit. With the T20 World Cup qualifiers approaching, the boys are ready to make their mark."
