Dubai, Sep 7 (NationPress) The captain of Oman, Jatinder Singh, has hailed his team's inaugural appearance in the Asia Cup as a significant chance to measure themselves against premier teams in the region. Oman qualified for the eight-team Asia Cup through the ACC Men’s Premier Cup held in April last year, alongside Hong Kong and the UAE.
In preparation for the Asia Cup, Oman conducted training sessions in Abu Dhabi and secured victories in two matches against Hong Kong. “This is a historic moment for us, marking our first participation in the Asia Cup. It’s an incredible experience to compete alongside cricketing powerhouses and assess our standing in the global cricket landscape,” remarked Jatinder during a virtual press interaction hosted by Sportcell.
Oman is placed in Group A, set to face Pakistan in Dubai on September 12, followed by matches against the UAE on September 15 and India on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. Right-arm medium pacer Sufyan Mehmood expressed confidence that Oman won't be easily dismissed by either India or Pakistan.
“Every moment in this tournament will be a historic occasion for us. When facing such formidable teams, we must play without fear, as we have nothing to lose. We aim to showcase our talent and hopefully challenge both sides,” he stated.
“It’s crucial for us to not make it an easy victory for them. If we continue playing well, I believe we can create a significant impact in this tournament,” he added.
Notably, both Jatinder and Sufyan have witnessed Oman’s evolution from a lesser-known team to one that has participated in T20 World Cups and is now competing in the Asia Cup for the first time. With several players of Indian origin in the team, the match against the Suryakumar Yadav-led side promises to be a valuable learning experience.
“Just a few days ago, during practice, I met Abhishek, Tilak, Arshdeep, and Shubman Gill. I’m looking forward to sharing insights and understanding their approach to the game,” Jatinder added.
On the influence of deputy head coach Sulakshan Kulkarni, Jatinder commented, “Our training has significantly evolved since he joined. We focus more on match scenarios, enhancing our readiness for competitive play.”
Sufyan concurred, emphasizing the winning mentality instilled by Kulkarni. “He continuously reminds us to maintain peak performance levels, which has instilled confidence in our skills,” he noted.
Amid the enthusiasm surrounding the Asia Cup, Jatinder and Sufyan expressed concern for the damage caused by recent floods in Punjab, emphasizing the importance of unity and support during challenging times.
