New Delhi, April 9 (NationPress) Just hours after Nemanja Matic, the former Manchester United midfielder now playing for Olympique Lyonnais, criticized Andre Onana by calling him ‘the worst goalkeeper in Man Utd’s modern history,’ the Cameroonian goalkeeper responded with a few pointed remarks on social media.

The exchange between Onana and Matic has intensified the rivalry ahead of the UEFA Europa League clash between Lyon and United. Matic's remarks were prompted by Onana's assertion that United was the superior team and should concentrate on showcasing their best football rather than worrying about their French opponents.

Onana posted, “I would never be disrespectful to another club. We know that tomorrow will be a challenging match against a formidable opponent. Our focus is on delivering a performance that makes our fans proud. At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some cannot claim the same.”

Matic, who made 189 appearances for the Red Devils during his five years at Old Trafford before departing on a free transfer, did not win any trophies during his tenure at the club, although he did secure two Premier League titles while with Chelsea.

The Serbian midfielder highlighted that Onana is “statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s modern history” and suggested that he must prove himself on the pitch before making such statements.

Matic commented, “To make such claims, you need to have justification. I respect everyone, but making such statements requires a basis. If you are among the worst goalkeepers in Man United history, you should be cautious about what you say.”

He added, “If David de Gea or Peter Schmeichel, or Edwin Van der Sar were to say that, I would reflect on my performance. However, if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s modern era, you need to demonstrate your worth before speaking out. We shall see.”

Matic's critique carries weight as Manchester United is on track for their worst league finish ever, surpassing the previous low set by Erik Ten Hag’s side in the 2023-24 season when they ended up in eighth place. Currently, they sit in 13th place with only 10 victories out of 31 matches played.
