New Chandigarh, May 30 (NationPress) After a disappointing defeat in the first qualifier of IPL 2025, Punjab Kings' fast bowling coach James Hopes discussed the team's shortcomings and conveyed hope for the upcoming qualifier to secure their spot in the tournament final.
The Punjab Kings were defeated by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru by eight wickets in a match lacking in runs, missing their chance to secure a direct entry into the final.
After batting first, PBKS lost crucial early wickets and could only muster 101 runs, leaving 35 balls unused. In contrast, RCB chased down the target in just 10 overs, losing only two wickets and clinching a place in the IPL 2025 final.
"We started the first over decently with the bat, but things quickly spiraled from there. The match just concluded 20 minutes ago, so processing it is challenging right now. Nonetheless, it's essential for us to reflect on it and move forward by tonight, as we have travel plans for tomorrow," Hopes stated during a post-match press conference.
"We need to prepare for another game on Sunday, and we are set to approach it the hard way now. I am hopeful we will face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru again on Tuesday evening... We have a short turnaround of two days to prepare for another final. We have invested over two months of hard work to earn a second chance, and we intend to capitalize on it," he added.
Hopes also acknowledged the issues faced by the PBKS batting lineup against RCB but reiterated that they should maintain their aggressive strategy rather than second-guess themselves.
"While our batsmen displayed some recklessness, their counter-attacking style has been effective throughout the season. It didn’t work tonight, but we need to discuss it. That said, we are heading to a pitch that will be entirely different from what we just played on," said the fast bowling coach.
He continued, "The aggressive mindset must return; I support that. The worst thing our batters can do now is hesitate and start second-guessing themselves. We are off to Ahmedabad, which historically presents a good pitch, and we know we need to play aggressively and score quickly. This is not the time for a complete reset."
The Punjab Kings will now face the winner of the eliminator between the Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans in the second qualifier this Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
