Punjab Kings (PBKS) are staring at elimination from IPL 2026 after suffering a sixth consecutive defeat, losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by 23 runs in Dharamshala on Sunday. Fast bowling coach James Hopes acknowledged the dire situation but insisted the side has not given up, with one match still remaining to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

A Collapse That Tells the Season's Story

Chasing a formidable target of 223, Punjab Kings were bundled out for 199/8, despite a fighting half-century from Shashank Singh. The defeat extended their losing streak to six matches — a brutal reversal after an opening run of six wins and one abandoned match that had once made them tournament favourites.

PBKS now sit on 13 points from 13 matches, with their playoff fate heavily dependent on other results going their way in the days ahead.

What Hopes Said After the Defeat

'Yeah, it's frustrating, to be honest. Yeah, we are staring it in the face now. There's still hope, but we need to turn it around. We need to tidy up some areas,' Hopes said at the post-match press conference.

The Australian bowling coach was candid about the pattern that has defined PBKS's recent outings. 'Today, once again, I felt like we were always chasing our tail, with the ball, not creating enough opportunities early. We controlled the Power-play pretty well, but every time we'd get back the momentum, they'd have a big over, they'd get back on top. And then in the chase, we sort of got going, but then, yeah, it just petered out,' he said.

Hopes also pointed to early wicket losses as a critical factor: 'We lost too many wickets early, but it was just... Tonight's game, the way we lost was less frustrating than the other games, to be honest. But, yeah, it was just another disappointing night.'

RCB's Disciplined Bowling Seals the Win

Defending 222/4, RCB produced a controlled bowling display spearheaded by Rasikh Salam Dar, who claimed three wickets to choke the PBKS chase. The victory lifted RCB to 18 points from 13 matches, securing their berth in the playoffs.

Hopes admitted that missed fielding opportunities cost PBKS roughly 20 extra runs, allowing RCB to post a total that ultimately proved beyond reach. He disagreed with the suggestion that PBKS had shifted into a defensive mindset following their high-scoring early wins, though he stopped short of detailing what tactical adjustments are planned.

The Road Ahead: One Last Chance

'We have a week now where, hopefully, a few results go our way, and we're playing again in the finals next weekend. But the boys have got to regroup, and they've got to stay positive, and they've got to believe, if we have an opportunity to make the finals, that we can make some noise if we get in there,' Hopes said.

He added that the focus now is on restoring confidence within the squad: 'At the moment, it's going to be about just instilling that belief back into them. And we've been trying. It's not through lack of training.' Whether PBKS can engineer a turnaround — and whether the results around them cooperate — will determine if their season ends with their final league fixture or extends into the knockouts.
