New Delhi, Dec 27 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund asserts that the Punjab Kings are falling short in having adequate backup for off-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal as they prepare for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
The Punjab Kings have bolstered their lineup with significant domestic acquisitions like Vishnu Vinod and Praveen Dubey, along with Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly, aimed at achieving middle-order stability during the mini auction. While Mukund lauded these strategic signings, he highlighted the pressing need for enhanced spin options.
Reflecting on the Punjab Kings’ approach during the auction, Mukund pointed out, "Punjab Kings didn’t require many additions going into the auction, having already made considerable investments. The only looming concern is Yuzvendra Chahal’s absence from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, raising questions about their backup options. They have brought in Pravin Dubey, a leg-spinner from Karnataka, and Cooper Connolly, an impressive left-handed all-rounder who can bat from three to five. This versatility certainly enhances their middle order," Mukund commented on JioStar.
Vishnu, who joined Bangalore in 2017 as a replacement for the injured KL Rahul, played three matches before being let go. After going unsold for three consecutive seasons, he was acquired by Delhi in 2021 but did not compete. Following stints with Hyderabad and Mumbai as a backup wicketkeeper, Vishnu was signed by Punjab ahead of the 2025 season.
Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has identified Vishnu Vinod as a standout addition for the Punjab Kings. "Vishnu Vinod is an electrifying signing for the Punjab Kings, and I sincerely hope he receives consistent chances in the IPL. We’ve only witnessed snippets of his potential during his time with the Mumbai Indians, but he possesses remarkable talent. His presence enhances the middle order and even provides an alternative fast-bowling option. He brings substantial value to this setup," Uthappa remarked.
