Mumbai, Aug 1 (NationPress) The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has imposed a prohibition on the use of the nation's name for teams representing it in private cricket leagues. This decision follows the controversy that arose during the World Championships of Legends (WCL), where Indian players declined to compete against the 'Pakistan Champions'.
As reported by Telecom Asia Sport (www.telecomasia.net), the PCB has opted to terminate the use of Pakistan's name in private leagues after the WCL in the UK was portrayed as a rivalry between India and Pakistan.
Sources revealed that the decision was made after an extensive discussion during the Board of Directors meeting on Thursday. The top officials considered it disrespectful for Indian players to refuse to face Pakistan in the second edition of the WCL.
Moving forward, no private entity will be granted permission to use the country’s name for cricket leagues. However, the existing Pakistan Legends team is permitted to compete in the final match against South Africa scheduled for Saturday.
Reports indicate that several private organizations have utilized Pakistan's name to participate in minor and lesser-known leagues across Zimbabwe, Kenya, and the USA.
“Legal actions will be taken against any private organizations that misuse Pakistan’s name. The PCB retains the exclusive right to authorize its usage for cricket events, provided the league and organization are deemed reputable,” the report cited sources close to the PCB.
Additionally, it has been reported that the Pakistan government and the Inter-provincial Coordination Committee (IPC), which oversees sports in the country, have issued a recommendation to the PCB to regulate the use of Pakistan's name in future private cricket leagues.
